5, 4, 3, 2, 1…Happy New Year!

I want to take the time to wish everyone a happy and healthy new year. I do hope that 2017 will be fulfilling. Take risks, learn from mistakes, be kind, stay present, breathe, laugh more, question authority (much needed this year), get out of my comfort zone, turn off electronic devices, accept myself, and allow more space for getting organized. These are my intentions for the coming year.

This January, I am planning on participating in the 30 in 30 project. (30 paintings in 30 days). I hope that it will kick off my art into the new year (and I will be using my above mentioned intentions often!)

This piece is part of my experimenting with poured paint medium. I opted to use colors inspired by the New York Mets – my favorite baseball team. Hoping this year will be a good one for them too!

Clarinet as art

This is a work in progress/study.  I am working from a wonderful photo I found (check it out here).  I have to say, I much prefer working with brushes versus the poured paint. Back to my comfort zone!

I love the lower register of the clarinet. This is where the best sounds are found. I’m still deciding if the orientation is going to bother me. When you play, the keys that look like fingernails, are at the bottom. When I turn the canvas around, it just doesn’t look correct.

I took the day off from work today and spent the morning at the studio. I am happy that the heater is working (somewhat); the last few times I went in, it was pretty cold and hard to do art. I love having a space so close to Casse-Croute Bakery. The warm croissant and coffee was the perfect answer to the cold temp.

Lately, I have been experimenting with the poured paint medium. I am not quite sure if I am liking this process or not. There’s a good deal of giving up control and the mess is a bit more then I am comfortable with (and I like to be messy).

For this experiment, I placed the pouring medium directly on the wood block that I first painted and then added my paint into the medium. I tried to not move the board – I just wanted to see what gravity did to the paint colors. I am not sure what it will look like when it dries (another downside to this process, IMHO). I like more instant gratification!

It’s pouring….paint

On Monday, I had the opportunity to take an intro to Pouring Paint class led by Linda Ryan. It was fun and messy! There’s a lot of relinquishing control when doing this technique. I also learned that there are many variables that you have to consider when doing the pouring paint technique: opacity, gravity, how and if the paint sediment settles and how the color changes when it dries, just to name a few.

These are my first attempts. I am looking forward to seeing how they look when they are dry. I hope to do more – explore other color combos. Maybe I will try to do them in the 30 in 30 challenge. Yay! Another reason to buy more art supplies!

Reflections on a Beautiful Day

Yesterday, I had a couple of hours to pass while my daughter participated in Orchestra rehearsal. The weather was ideal and I was just a few steps by the beautiful Lake Merritt in Oakland. I made it about 1/3 of the way around the lake. As I was walking, I felt so inspired by the city of Oakland. The lake just perfectly showcases the downtown buildings. I observed the beautiful blend of people from all backgrounds. Yes, it is a city with its problems (crime, schools, cost of living – to name a few). There are many things going darn right there too! This kind of day gives me hope and inspiration.

Getting in the holiday spirit

It was the perfect rainy morning to do some art. I wanted to do something that got me in a holiday state of mind. This is a small (8×10) acrylic painting.

We are going to have an open studio on December 3rd to coincide with the Downtown Livermore festivities. I’ll be selling my paintings, prints and cards. If you are in town, please check it out. My talented studio mates will also be there with their beautiful art too!

Safety pin

I did a quick sketch this morning. Using a safety pin was on my “to do list” as part of my sewing theme. But this is different. This is necessary for me to communicate – I am a person who is in solidarity with those who have less privilege in our society. I am also someone who understands my own sense of privilege. Please know that I am a safe person who will stand up to injustice to the best of my ability.
